After 67 years of Ghana’s independence, men, women, and children are still dying on hospital floors. People who are terminally ill and need immediate health care are taken from one hospital to another because of the lack of hospital beds.
We are still experimenting with the education of our children, not knowing which direction to take. Every rainy season renders people homeless, coupled with the loss of precious lives and valuable goods and properties. Most of our youth are unemployed. And of course, the blame always goes to the politicians and those holding key positions in government.
Hear me when I say, whatever is wrong with our country is wrong with every citizen. The person that insists on taking a bribe from you before you get the document that is due you, is that person the “president“? The person who insists on sleeping with ladies before he offers them a job, the person who breaks traffic regulations on the road with impunity, the person who is overcharging for goods and services provided, the government worker who goes to work at 12 midday and closes at 3 pm, the religious leader who is feeding off his flock, using all manner of means to extort money from these desperate souls; that person is the average Ghanaian, like you and me.
That ‘CONSTRUCT’ of the average Ghanaian- that is the person in religion, education, the economy, medicine, and political fields- that is the person in the Judiciary, legislature, executive, and G.F.A. That is the person sitting in government offices, that is the person in senior positions – at the TOP, and the same person at the BOTTOM. That is the person stealing money from the bank even though he is a staff member. That is the person stealing money from the small business you have set up. That is the person taking 1, 2, and 5 Ghana cedis on our roads, instead of making sure the right things are done.
Study our conduct and values carefully and you will find out that we have become bold in doing the wrong things. We have set aside the rule of law with impunity. We have become bold in helping foreigners break our law and abuse the rights and freedom of our fellow Ghanaians. Next year is coming and some of these politicians will go back to the people with false humility and beg them for votes. Foreigners still hail us as the most hospitable people, probably because we do not mind lying down for foreigners to walk on us, but these same people will undermine our fellow Ghanaians who are trying hard to shine.
A country where it is becoming extremely dangerous to be honest. Once you say things as they are, a hit is placed on your back, and you will be targeted for extinction. Try to be honest in Ghana now, and you will get punished. We hate honesty but cherish those who are blatantly dishonest. God has blessed us with every natural resource but look at our condition…. It is sad, it is a pity…
If you ask me, I think it is the “CONSTRUCT” of the average Ghanaian that needs complete overhauling, metamorphosis, and a complete mental shift.
The institutions (religion, schools, family) that are supposed to help build the Ghanaian person’s mental construct from childhood block by block are failing us.
In countries where people are behaving right and the system is working, it starts from the day a baby is born. VALUES are taught by the family; they are in the curriculum in schools. Those countries that most of us are in a hurry to run to because we think life is far more enjoyable there had to take the tough decision once upon a time to make things work. Why can’t we do the same here?
We need a total renewal of mind that will bring transformation. We can keep fasting, praying, and organizing healing and deliverance sessions, but until we renew the mind of the ordinary Ghanaian we are stuck.
It is hard to break sociological patterns – but we must try and renew and change our minds.
If you are 67 years old, we consider you an elder, a mature person…. is Ghana mature???
May God help us have a renewal of mind.
