The Corrupting Influence of Power: A Lesson in True Greatness

Power Corrupts

In Mark 10:35-45, two brothers approached Jesus with a request to sit on His right and left, seeking power and influence. Power is the ability to make decisions, compel obedience, and shape public opinion. While seeking power is natural, there are two types: socialized power (used for others’ benefit) and personalized power (used for personal gain).

To achieve greatness and acquire power, there is a due process to follow. David, anointed king as a teenager, spent years learning and preparing before taking the throne. He followed protocol, learned from King Saul and others, and didn’t rush the process.

Today, we often seek shortcuts to success, wealth, and power without putting in the effort. Jesus teaches us that true power comes from following due process, appreciating the journey, and using our influence for the greater good. We must carry the cross before wearing the crown.”

  •  How do you use your power? To build up or tear down?
Those in positions of authority – politicians, civil servants, business owners, religious leaders, healthcare professionals, parents, lawyers, and those with wealth and knowledge – can easily become abusers.
Do you use your power to oppress, dominate, or exploit others?

True power, as Jesus taught, is about serving and showing genuine care and concern.

  •  Don’t let power corrupt your soul.
A life of privilege, wealth, education, and prestige can lead to abuse of power. As we rise in social status, we may become more likely to engage in impulsive behavior, infidelity, promiscuity, violate rules, lie, cheat, and communicate disrespectfully. Research shows that the wealthy, educated, and prestigious are more likely to act on sexual impulses and commit heinous crimes.

Power can lead us away from empathy, compassion, gratitude, altruism, and genuine care for others. Don’t let power diminish your concern for others. Instead, use your power for good, to help others, and remember your values to sustain your humanity.

Shalom, and God bless you.

Truly power has the capacity to corrupt us. May the Lord guides us through this life.
